Temperament

Temperament:

THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT SUBJECT! I'VE LEARNED OVER THE YEARS, NO MATTER HOW WELL BRED A DOG IS OR HOW GREAT HIS/HER PEDIGREE MAY BE, A PUPPY'S TEMPERAMENT CAN NOT BE GUARANTEED. PEOPLE WILL SCREW IT UP! A PUPPY WILL BE INFLUENCED, TAUGHT, AND EXPOSED TO IMPROPER SOCIALIZATION, TRAINING, UNHEALTHY LIVING CONDITIONS, AND BAD PEOPLE... ALL THAT HAVE THE ABILITY TO SHAPE HOW A PUP GROWS UP. THESE THINGS, AMOUNG OTHER INFLUENCES WILL MOLD A DOG'S TEMPERAMENT ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. PLEASE, TAKE GREAT CARE IN HOW YOU RAISE YOUR PUPPY TO ALLOW HIM/HER TO LIVE A HAPPY, HEALTHY, AND JOYFUL LIFE...

Temperament is the general attitude a dog displays towards people and other animals; its the combined inherited and aquired physical and mental traits that influence the dog's behavior. As with ALL breeds, the Pit Bull has positive and negative traits in their temperament. American Pit Bull Terriers often display dog aggression, especially towards unfamliar dogs of the same sex or level of assertiveness. Early socialization and good training can mean that many individuals of the breed may not display this trait. And with proper training and socialization, Pit Bulls are not aggressive and can even make excellent service dogs. Many working breeds have antipathy towards other animals-coonhounds go mad at the site of a raccoon, foxhounds will not hesitate to tear a fox or fox-like dog to shreds, greyhounds live to chase and maul rabbits and dog-like coyotes. Even the ever-friendly Beagle will slaughter a rabbit given the chance. And yet the greyhound, coon, foxhound, and beagle are among the friendliest of breeds towards humans. And it is this way with the American Pit Bull Terrier as well. A correct Pit Bull is more often than not submissive towards all humans, and adore children. Aggressive behavior towards humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and a Pit Bull that snarls, lunges, or growls at non-threatening humans is NOT typical of the breed and should NOT be used for breeding! Pit Bulls that do show aggressive behavior towards humans is highly undesirable and should be humanely euthanized.

1. Pit Bulls are often dog-aggessive to one extent or another (this often shows up at or near sexual maturity). A dog that was previously non-dog aggressive may not like other dogs of the same sex, or for that matter, any dog at all. Adult Pit Bulls should NEVER be left alone with other dogs and require proper supervision.

2. Pit Bulls may exhibit intense ''prey-drive'', leading them to ''stalk'' small animals such as cats, rats, chickens, and other livestock and animals.

3. Pit Bulls are precocious and incomparable escape artists, who will often seem to squirt right out of a supposedly secure yard or enclosure. The breed's natural agility makes it one of the most capable canine climbers. So good fencing is a must for this breed. When coupled with #1 and #2, you can see why a responsible Pit Bull owner is a vigilant Pit Bull owner.

4. Pit Bulls are intelligent and most enjoy training, if its done properly. This makes them excellent propects for dog sports such as agility, obedience, weight pulling, and frisbee competitions.

5. Pit Bulls tend to LOVE people, All people. This makes them a poor choice for a ''guardian of property breed'' unless properly trained. A Pit Bull that show's unprovoked human aggressive (puppy play nips does NOT count) is showing BAD TEMPERAMENT and in most cases should be put to sleep. Such a dog should obviously NEVER be bred under any circumstances. The breeding of dogs with bad temperaments is one of the largest problems the breed faces today and fuels the fire of ''Breed Specific Legislation''.

6. Pit Bulls tend to be very ''Soft'' with their family, meaning that they are eager to please their humans. A Pit Bull of proper temperament is a devoted and loving family member, inspiring immence loyality of the breed. You will often hear a Pit Bull owner tell you after owning one, they will never own any other breed.

NOTE:

Throughout my website, while discussing the Pit Bull breed you will notice two words repeated over and over again. ''RESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP''. With media hysteria and BSL (Breed Specific Legislation), we good owners find ourselves endlessly having to defend our breed. Every bad story and headline damages our dogs even further. Irresponsible and ignorant owners have done almost as much damage to these dogs as dogfighters have. The Pit Bull is ans exceptional breed that requires exceptional dedication and ownership. The breeds very survival depends on new owners knowing what their getting into, and ALL OWNERS BEING RESPONSIBLE AND PROTECTING THE BREED'S REPUTATION.
